Your hair is your crown! We’re sure you’ve heard us say this time and time again, and for a good reason. The key to looking good is hair that’s well-maintained and healthy.

However, to our benefit, our natural hair has a completely different texture from other types of hair. We need to give it extra care and attention to keep it healthy. Curly hair requires more hydration and less manipulation. Plus, you will need more patience in maintaining it.

If you want to learn all about hair maintenance tips and hairstyles that will keep looking great while working from home, we came up with a list to help. Check it out below!

Hair Maintenance Tips

Comb your hair from the ends, to the roots.

Tangles are a common problem for us curlistas. If you start combing from the top, you end up having to force your way through all the tangles that have bundled up as you comb through your hair. A big ouch for your scalp and delicate strands! Don’t forget how the friction will cause your hair to have more longterm damage. To help you gently detangle any knots, you can comb your hair from the bottom going upwards.

Additionally, say goodbye to your traditional hairbrush! Using the wrong brush would disrupt your natural curl pattern, as it’s more suitable for straight styles and taming flyaways. Experts say that it is better to use wide-tooth combs on naturally curly hair. Wide-tooth combs are a lot gentler when it comes to detangling, which you should consider as every curl can serve as a possible breaking point.

Opt for a regular trims, to save your hair from split ends.

Split ends can make your hair frizzy. Moreover, it can get in the way of length retention.  The reason behind this is because as your hair grows longer, the ends could break off. We all know that damaged hair is not a good look.  This is why we recommend that you get a quick trim every six to eight weeks. You can also prevent split ends by deep conditioning your hair at least once per week.

detangling your curls for curly hair care

Have a pre-shampoo regimen

Shampooing removes the hair’s natural oils, leaving it dry and frizzy. Aside from the fact that our curls are normally drier, things like heat exposure and chemical treatments can make it more brittle and damaged. When it comes to curly hair care, your normal shampoo+condition routine is NOT enough. What you need is a pre-shampoo regimen!

In a nutshell, a pre-shampoo regimen is a step done before shampooing to restore your hair health. During this step, you apply a product that conditions, softens and detangles your hair to prevents roughness and damage. Go for products that have natural oils  like our Blueberry Bliss Hair Growth Oil to boost your hair’s moisture, strength, and shine.

First, you have to divide your hair into 4-8 sections before applying the product. This is done to make sure that all parts of your hair will be covered. The next step is to detangle your hair, just like we explained earlier. Massage the product into each section of your hair and leave it in for at least 30 minutes. If your hair has a lot of tangles, you can put on a shower cap or towel to open up the cuticles of your hair and let the treatment penetrate deeper. You can then wash, condition, and rinse your hair like you normally do.

Product Cocktailing

And here’s the last, but not the least, of our hair maintenance tips.

No product has it ALL—this is why you should definitely try product cocktailing! Product cocktailing is the process of mixing two products together to meet your hair needs. You’ll find all the natural hair products for your unique needs whether it’s by hair texture, season, problem, lifestyle or routine at our CURLS Store.
